Mahjong Rack Guide

Mahjong racks are a key part of any tablescape. Think of them as the supportive best friend to the tile superstars. Beyond functionality, racks add color, texture, and personality to the table. They can create contrast, add warmth, or provide a soft complement to your overall table color scheme.

Racks typically come in two sizes: 18.5" or 20". Make sure to check the size of your favorite tiles before purchasing, but my recommendation is always to go with 20" racks since they’ll work with virtually any tile set. Most 20" racks come with detached magnetic pushers, usually with either 2 or 3 magnets. I own both and honestly haven’t noticed much of a difference between 2 or 3 magnets.

There are so many rack brands out there, but theses are my favorite racks:

Oh My Mahjong has acrylic racks too; they are 18.5" and a slimmer acrylic than My Fair Mahjong. They carry faux finishes like carrara marble and burl wood. They are not my favorites. They look fake to me, sorry!

Plastic Racks: Most are shorter, at 18.5" inches, often found on Amazon Multi color or clear. Just be aware that due to size, they can be limiting depending on your tiles sizes.

Double Racks: These racks are used to play Siamese Mahjong - aka two people mahj. They come in wood or 3d printed for a lighter and more portable option. For wood, look at Bam Bird Boutique in beautiful walnut or the white painted ones from Bam Let's Mahj. Use MLN10 for 10% off for all these brands.

Travel Racks: These racks usually come with your travel set. My faves are from Peace Love Mahjong and Miss Mahjong. But if you want to get a different color or customize in any way, ask my friend at Dot Crak Bam Boom. She can do so many colors and variations. Use MLN10 for 10% off

Storage Bags: Proper storage is essential to prevent scratches, no matter the rack material. I use the Peace Love Mahjong storage bags ($30), but similar options are also available from Mahj House Rules ($24) and Woodland Mahjong Society ($25).
